How should a vagina smell?
According to Dr. Ronald D. Blatt, chief surgeon and medical director of the Manhattan Center for Vaginal Surgery he says ‘a healthy vagina should not smell‘. But girls, all know that vaginas often do smell, not a horrible I’m going to faint or throw up smell but they do have their own fragrance just like our natural body odour.
Most of the time, these vagina smells aren’t bad — they just smell like a vagina; the same way you sometimes smell sweaty or how your feet stink in certain shoes. We smell like humans and the smell of our vaginas depend on certain factors. If you just took a shower and washed your lady-bits, there probably isn’t any smell. But if you just had a marathon exercise session in tight shorts or if you have sweaty sex on a hot day, your vagina will have an odour!
Every vagina has its own unique scent, which is a combination of the normal bacteria that reside in your vagina, your diet, if you wear natural fabrics or synthetics, your level of hygiene, your bathroom habits, and what your glands secrete. It’s important not to forget that your vagina also secretes pheromones that are supposed to trigger sexual interest and excitement.
It is difficult to describe what a vagina should smell like, but much easier to describe what is should not smell like.
The smell we notice the most, and the one which is most common, is a fishy smell or something rotting.
This is from bacterial vaginosis, which is really an imbalance of good bacteria and bad bacteria. The correct medical name is the bacteria called anaerobic bacteria tends to get overgrown. The pH of the vagina is an important gauge for what’s going on down there.
Lots of you will notice after having your period that there is a different odour. Also you will notice a change in the scent after having sex. Semen is really basic — it has a pH of around eight — so when you have sex, it changes the pH in the vagina to the basic side of things.
The clever thing about your vagina is that it is self-cleaning and that they naturally produce some discharge that helps to eject germs and bacteria out of your body. You have regular discharge, which is mostly white with a little yellow, but when it’s grey or neon green or yellow, that’s not good.
Also if your vagina is itchy or there’s pain, those are signs that something isn’t right. You have an infection or something more serious so you should see your doctor.
If you use tampons, sometimes we forget to take the last one out at the end of your period. This will retain bad Smells and you should remove it and have a warm bath to clean your vagina and surrounding area. Your tampon can not get lost inside you so don’t panic if it is harder than normal to pull out. Just lay down in a comfortable position and have a feel around inside your vagina, it will be tucked away inside, just catch a bit of it to move it into position to pull out. Everyone who uses tampons, thinks at some point, they have lost one, don’t panic!
We are always told by Doctors NOT to use scented products INSIDE your vagina, that is because this body tissue is the most delicate in the body, and the most sensitive to irritation.
So basically don’t mess around with your vagina, it knows how to look after itself and it have its own way of self cleaning. If you see or smell something different and have not just been covered in sweat for any reason, think about your pH level and if it continues then pop to see your lady Doctor.
